Many people--myself included--have longed for, sought out, won and lost, looking for that special someone to "do life with." A "love of my life;" a partner to face the highs and lows with; someone who would be constant and never leave.
Understanding that God wants to "do life" with me is something I've known intellectually most of my adult life, but that kind of intimacy felt out of reach for a good chunk of my walk with Him.
I had fleeting moments for sure, but a pervasive assurance of not only His nearness but His interest in me, was lacking.
I've been emotionally or physically left, abandoned, or betrayed by almost every person close to me in my life. That kind of experience is a breeding ground for fear and mistrust....even of God.
But weirdly, it is those painful experiences that created a desperation that drove me to reach out to the well that never runs dry...Jesus Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit, who has become my constant companion.
While I enjoy my earthly husband immensely, he is human and flawed, and his physical being is but dust of the earth. I am not guaranteed his presence to the end. But Jesus, He is my guaranteed partner. And my friendship with the Holy Spirit has become a very real source of daily comfort and stability that cannot be stolen from me.
